Yes, and this is widely recognized in the food and beverage industry that plastic reduces food waste. As a durable material, plastic packaging protects our food and enables products to be transported from multiple countries and regions. As an exemple, broccoli wrapped in plastic film will last up to 20 days in the refrigerator, whereas it will last only 6 days when unwrapped. That is more than three times longer!<\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n

Plastic helps prolonging the shelf life of a product. Here is one of the many examples that illustrate this; the shelf life of cucumbers is extended from 3 days to 14 days when wrapped in polyethylene shrink wrap. So, without plastics, as consumers, we would all have to change our lifestyles reverting to shopping for fresh food everyday. This would mean there is a great possibility that prices would increase due to food waste at the store level.<\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n

Yes! A packaging that is 100% polyethylene is fully recyclable. However, a packaging that is composed of different types substrates is not necessarely recyclable, unless clearly identified as such.<\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n

A product or packaging will carry a two (2) (HDPE) or four (4) (LDPE) for recyclability. These bags or packages can be disposed off in your household or curbside recycling bin.<\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n

PolyExpert is working on several fronts to create a more sustainable future. Our strategy sets targets in 4 main focus areas: Operational, People, Product Development, and Communication. As an example, one of our main operational goal is to reduce water used in our manufacturing process by 90% in 2020, thanks to performing cooling equipment. On a more global approach, we have always been proactive in recycling our own plastic waste, as well as metals, ink cartridges and more.<\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n

We take at heart the continued optimization of our products to reduce material usage for packaging and design films that are more environment friendly. \n What type of durable products do you make?\n

PolyExpert has been making biodegradable agricultural mulch film based on certified resins for more than a decade. In addition, we have many durable films that are made with our own post industrial resins. These post industrial resins (or PIR) come from film retains or unused materials and bags recuperated by manufacturers and converters. Our categories of products that use these include boutique bags, courier bags, and certain packaging films where PIR content range from 25 to 70%. The higher the content, the greater the variability in processing and printing parameters as well as film attributes, such as clarity.<\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n

\n Do you have films made with Post Consumer Recycled material (PCR)?\n

We are presently in the final stages of commercialization of films using 25 to 95% of post consumer resin. Our resin is made of bags and other flexible packaging, retrieved from various recycling processes after consumer use. The clarity and color tend to vary depending on the source, and the presence of gels should be expected. Moreover, quality of the PCR resins is upgrading constantly, and higher end (and costly) clear FDA compliant resins are available today.<\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n

\n Do you have biodegradable films?\n

A biodegradable plastic is a degradable plastic in which the degradation results from the action of naturally occurring microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi or algae. Simply put, any material can eventually biodegrade, even if it takes 10 years, but it does not make it a sustainable solution. In other words, the generic term "biodegradable" without a context is misleading to consumers. At PolyExpert, we offer packaging solutions that are both biodegradable and compostable.<\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n

Yes, we have available compostable films using FDA grade resins for the food industry, and others films using regular compostable resins, for applications in agricultural and certain commercial markets. Usual parameters set for film manufacturing, conversion and printing need to be adjusted when working with such resins. Price is also a factor that needs to be taken into consideration; it can be as much as three times the price of regular resin. <\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n

\n What are oxo-degradable plastics?\n

Often confused with biodegradable plastics, oxo-degradable plastics are neither recyclable, nor compostable. They are rather a conventional plastic mixed with additives in order to trigger fragmentation. When exposed to UV light, heat and\/or oxygen, this plastic will become brittle and eventually break apart. The resulting microplastics are left in the environment indefinitely. These types of plastics are becoming more and more disputed around the world. In Europe for example, oxo-degradable products were added to the list of plastics that will be banned within the EU market in 2021. (European Parliament, October 24, 2018).<\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n

\n Do you have bio-based products?\n

Bio-based plastics are made in whole or partially from renewable resources like sugarcane (to produce bio-based polyethylene, or PE), or starch (that can be processed to produce lactic acid and subsequently polylactic acid (PLA). By the naked eye, regular PE and Bio-based PE look the same. However, some bio-based PE films are not recyclable, and none are compostable. We at PolyExpert manufacture mulch films that contain some bio-based material.<\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n

\n Do you make polylactic acid known as PLA ?\n

We do not currently process PLA (polylactic acid) to make blown film. For the moment, we promote polyethylene's recyclability, and favor materials like biodegradable and compostable. <\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n

In 2016, we decided to join the ECORESPONSIBLE program that includes a series of strategies and tools to support businesses like us looking to improve their sustainable development overall. Our goal is to obtain our Level 2 certification before 2020.
